Meeting the Challenges of International Online Teaching

    Get PDF
Online courses serving international students present a number of distinct challenges. Instructors must address significant cultural differences, cope with the language barrier, and educate students about unfamiliar disciplinary standards. This presentation will demonstrate common technologies that are helpful in dealing with these challenges and discuss recent scholarship regarding other methods and tools that address the unique needs of the international online student. Attendees will also be invited to participate in a discussion of these issues

Religionswissenschaft as Colonialist Discourse: The Case of Rudolf Otto

    Get PDF
The dominant approach to the study of religion known as the phenomenology of religion's core assumption was that underlying the multiplicity of historical and geographically dispersed religions was an ultimately metaphysical, trans-historical substratum, called 'man', Geist, or 'consciousness'. This transhistorical substratum is an expressive agent with a uniform, essential nature. By reading the data of religion as its 'expressions', it is possible to sympathetically understand their meaning. Geist, or 'man', then, is both a philosophy of history and i hermeneutical theory. It also forms a systematic set of representations, which replicate the structure of the asymmetrical relations between Europeans and those colonized by Europeans. The metanarrative of Geist is a narrative of the supremacy - their term, not mine - of white, Christian Europe over black, 'primitive' Africal and 'despotic' Asia. Spirit moves from the South to the North; away from the East to the West. This paper locates Rudolf Otto's work within the structure and history of phenomenological discourse and argues that the science of religion as described there conforms nearly perfectly to the structures of colonial discourse as this has been discussed and analyzed by theorists such as Jaques Derrida and Edward Said

Well-posedness and blowup for the dispersion-managed nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation

We consider the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with periodic dispersion management. We first establish global-in-time Strichartz estimates for the underlying linear equation with suitable dispersion maps. As an application, we establish a small-data scattering result for the 3d3d cubic equation. Finally, we use a virial argument to demonstrate the existence of blowup solutions for the 3d3d cubic equation with piecewise constant dispersion map.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur

Student Perceptions of WebCT in a Web-Supported Instructional Environment: Distance Education Technologies for the Classroom

    Get PDF
Web-supported instruction is becoming more commonplace in today\u27s colleges and universities (Lindner, Dooley, & Murphy, 2001). This paper explores student perceptions of the use of WebCT to support instructional objectives in a Web-supported environment. Data for the study were collected with a survey instrument using WebCT on-line testing tools. The results show WebCT contributed to students\u27 ability to accomplish the course objectives. Students, however, continued to rely on print-based course materials and did not create student-centered on-line learning environments

Tidal and marine energy in the uk– identifying the future challenges for supply chain development

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the current technical and operational supply chain issues surrounding the development of tidal and marine energy production in the UK. The paper outlines the market and growth potential of tidal energy production in the UK before identifying the key supply chain themes surrounding tidal energy production including an analysis of the portability and transferability of current supply chain thinking and development from other renewable energy systems such as wind turbine technology towards the development of tidal energy supply chain systems. The paper closes by identifying the major challenges that the UK supply chain must overcome in order to develop a comprehensive and robust supply chain system

An electrophysiological examination of intentional and inadvertent sleep onset : the effect of intention on the sleep onset process

    Get PDF
The main purpose ofthis study was to examine the effect ofintention on the sleep onset process from an electrophysiological point ofview. To test this, two nap conditions, the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and the Repeated Test of Sustained Wakefulness (RTSW) were used to compare intentional and inadvertent sleep onset. Sixteen female participants (aged 19-25) spent two non-consecutive nights in the sleep lab; however, due to physical and technical difficulties only 8 participants produced compete sets of data for analysis. Each night participants were given six nap opportunities. For three ofthese naps they were instructed to fall asleep (MSLT), for the remaining three naps they were to attempt to remain awake (RTSW). These two types of nap opportunities represented the conditions ofintentional (MSLT) and inadvertent (RTSW) sleep onset. Several other sleepiness, performance, arousal and questionnaire measures were obtained to evaluate and/or control for demand characteristics, subjective effort and mental activity during the nap tests. The nap opportunities were scored using a new 9 stage scoring system developed by Hori et al. (1994). Power spectral analyses (FFT) were also performed on the sleep onset data provided by the two nap conditions. Longer sleep onset latencies (approximately 1.25 minutes) were obseIVed in the RTSW than the MSLT. A higher incidence of structured mental activity was reported in the RTSW and may have been reflected in higher Beta power during the RTSW. The decent into sleep was more ragged in the RTSW as evidenced by an increased number shifts towards higher arousal as measured using the Hori 9 stage sleep scoring method. 1ll The sleep onset process also appears to be altered by the intention to remain awake, at least until the point ofinitial Stage 2 sleep (i.e. the first appearance of spindle activity). When only examining the final 4.3 minutes ofthe sleep onset process (ending with spindle activity), there were significant interactions between the type ofnap and the time until sleep onset for Theta, Alpha and Beta power. That is to say, the pattern of spectral power measurements in these bands differed across time as a function ofthe type ofnap. The effect ofintention however, was quite small (,,2 < .04) when compared to the variance which could be accounted for by the passage oftime (,,2 == .10 to .59). These data indicate that intention alone cannot greatly extend voluntary wakefulness if a person is sleepy. This has serious implications for people who may be required to perform dangerous tasks while sleepy, particularly for people who are in a situation that does not allow them the opportunity to engage in behavioural strategies in order to maintain their arousal

A Path to Resolution Regarding the Show Lamb Tail Docking Controversy

    Get PDF
Short dock length in show lambs increases health risks and creates animal welfare concerns. The study reported here was conducted to 1) describe a population of lambs that were docked at the distal end of the caudal fold in terms of a linear measurement, and 2) determine the changes in tail length between docking, weaning, and market. A total of 782 lambs docked at the distal end of the caudal fold, comprised the population of lambs in the study. The results provide descriptive statistics to help guide industry leaders and Extension professionals concerned with docking standards at shows and sales
